4 Must-Have Maternity Photo Ideas for You and Your Family

When it comes to must-have maternity photo ideas, I’ve got you covered. As a Coeur d’Alene maternity photographer who takes a lifestyle photography approach, I know these sessions can be truly magical. There are a lot of tried-and-true poses and looks when it comes to maternity, but I love to put my own spin on things (of course).

1. Let Go Of Control

This is more of my professional opinion, but it still works here. What I mean is that I want you to feel relaxed, comfortable, and free! Like any other session, I want you to have fun on your maternity shoot. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, and you’ve got littles joining in the session, my ultimate goal is for you to be yourself. I find that expectant mama’s can get so stressed over maternity photos, and believe me, I understand! This is a pivotal time in your and your family’s life, so you want the photos to be perfect. I get that; however, perfect is boring! Your family is unique, goofy, and imperfect. Let go of control, and let’s celebrate your family as they are.

2. Be Where You’re Happiest

Living in Coeur d’Alene, we’re blessed to have such gorgeous scenery right at our fingertips. Whenever clients opt for outdoor locations, I’m over the moon! So many of us out West feel most connected, most ourselves, when we’re in nature. What better place to be when documenting this special time in your life? Out among the trees, breathing in the fresh air, and hearing the sounds of nature is a beautiful backdrop for maternity photos. Of course, at-home sessions are equally as magical. Our homes are a safe space, a haven. We put time, effort, energy (and money) into making our homes unique and true to us. Photographing maternity moments in your home is something I love to do.

3. Keep It Simple

As a working mama myself, I am always aiming for simplicity, at work and at home! Something to drive home: simple does not mean boring. When you subtract elements, you’re often left with the best! Your outfit, your hair and makeup, they should reflect you. I know in these photos, you want to look your best, but you don’t want to go too far. What I mean is, don’t make a caricature out of yourself! Style yourself how you typically would, with maybe a pop of something, since it is a special occasion, after all.

4. Get Playful

That’s right, get playful! You’re documenting this incredible moment in time, so don’t hold back. Run around with your littles, snuggle into each other, and be your true selves. Stiff, rigid posing doesn’t lend well to lifelong memories, trust me. The purpose is to capture this time where your family was blossoming, and I want you to remember how wonderful and chaotic it was years down the line. Swing your kiddos around, dance in the kitchen, and tuck in close! Of course, we’ll add some natural and special poses here and there, but the goal is for it to look organic. Reflect the love that exists between your growing family, and the photos will speak for themselves.
