The Power of Creative Trust in Photography
Today I want to talk about the power of creative trust in photography. As a photographer, there’s nothing quite like hearing a client say,
“I gotchu. I see your vision.”
Those six words—spoken with enthusiasm and total trust—stopped me in my tracks during a recent senior session with Zoe, a rising senior at Seattle Prep who also happens to be a photographer herself.
She was excited, a little nervous (aren’t we all?), and bursting with creative energy. As we wandered through the forest, chatting about light and angles, I found myself narrating what I was doing out loud: “I’m going to crouch here and shoot through these flowers to soften the background…” or “Let’s chase that last bit of sun over the ridge.”
Every time, Zoe would respond:
“I gotchu. I see the vision.”
And every time, it felt like a creative yes. A moment of co-creation. An unspoken agreement that we were in this together.
Collaboration Over Control = Magic
I’m a big believer that the best sessions aren’t just directed—they’re collaborative.
Whether I’m photographing a senior who’s never been in front of a professional camera or a family of five in their sun-drenched living room, the energy is always better when everyone feels like a part of the process. I’ll guide you, always—but I’ll also invite your ideas, your energy, your spark.
Because that’s what makes the images yours.
With Zoe, we weren’t following a strict shot list or chasing perfection. We were chasing curiosity. Light. A feeling. We tromped through uneven terrain not knowing if it would lead anywhere. Spoiler: it did. A wild patch of flowers, a sliver of golden light, and one very cool angle later, we had the kind of frame-worthy shots you can’t plan—you just have to trust your way into them.
For Photographers: Invite Your Clients In
If you’re a photographer reading this, here’s my take:
Explain your process. Out loud. Invite them in.
When clients understand what you’re doing—and why—they go from posing to participating. They stop worrying about looking awkward and start focusing on the shared creative moment.
And when they trust you? Really trust you?
That’s when the magic happens.
For Clients: Say Yes to the Unknown
To my amazing clients (and future clients!), know this:
You don’t have to show up with all the answers. You just have to show up open.
When you bring your trust, your energy, and your willingness to try something new—even if it means tromping through brush or laughing through a weird prompt—that’s what makes the photos feel real.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present. And that is where the beauty lives.
So whether you’re in front of the lens or behind it…
Remember: “I gotchu, I see your vision” might just be the best thing you can say.
