Why Your Film Photos Are Still Off

Today I want to talk to you about why your film photos are still off—even when you’re metering correctly. This is a common problem, but can be an easy fix!

Let’s talk about the moment every film photographer dreads: You scan your film… and it’s meh. Grainy, muddy, or just plain flat. You swear you metered correctly. So what the heck happened?

Here’s the truth: metering “correctly” doesn’t always mean copying what the meter reading says—especially indoors.

If your photos still feel off even after doing the “right” thing with your handheld meter, it might not be your gear or your film stock. It’s more likely your approach to exposure is still a little fuzzy. Don’t worry—you’re not alone.

I see this all the time inside my course Metering Made Easy. Talented photographers doing all the things they were told—and still ending up with muddy scans, inconsistent color, or blown highlights.

Why? Because metering isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it tool. It’s a creative decision. And here are a few hidden reasons your results might still be falling short:

1. You’re Metering for the Light, Not the Image

Film isn’t a machine. It’s a medium with mood. What you’re really doing is setting the tone. Are you going for soft and airy? Moody and contrasty? Your meter can’t tell you that—you have to decide it first.

2. You’re Ignoring Light Direction

That dreamy look you love? It doesn’t come from exposure alone. If you don’t consider where the light’s coming from (and what’s blocking it), you could be setting yourself up for weird contrast or flat tones.

3. You’re Not Adjusting for Film Stock Personality

Some films (hi, Portra 400) can handle a bit of overexposure. Others (like Ektar or CineStill) turn into hot, saturated chaos if you’re not precise. Metering isn’t one-size-fits-all—and your method should change depending on the stock.

The Good News?

You can fix all of this—and actually start trusting your readings again—with a simple, step-by-step system that removes the guesswork.

It’s what I teach in Metering Made Easy, a course designed for photographers who want consistent, beautiful results indoors without burning through expensive rolls of film just to “test and pray.”

Inside, you’ll learn my proprietary IMAGE Metering Method that walks you through how to think about light before you even raise your camera. Because metering should serve your vision—not fight it.
