Why Your Family Sessions Deserve a Little More Fun (and a Lot Less Bribery)

Today let’s talk about why your family sessions deserve a little more fun (and a lot less bribery). Let’s be honest—family photo sessions can feel like a game of survival. You show up, snacks in your pockets, praying nobody melts down (including you), and try to “just get one good one.” I know. I’ve been there. I have been so stressed that the thought of trying to smile, like for real, seems laughable (ironic? yes.)

But here’s the truth: It doesn’t have to be that way.

Over the years, I’ve learned something kind of radical… Fun is the fastest way to real connection. Not fake giggles. Not “say cheese.” Not bribing kids with jellybeans and crossing your fingers. I’m talking about real fun. Like tickle fights on the couch. Like Dad being the airplane. Like the moment Mom forgets the camera is there and just breathes in her baby’s curls.

What If Fun Was the Strategy?

You know I’m a big fan of Brené Brown, and maybe you’ve even seen her quote on my website here that says, “Laughter, song, and dance create emotional and spiritual connection; they remind us of the one thing that truly matters when we are searching for comfort, celebration, inspiration, or healing: We are not alone.”

And that’s the heart of what I do with every single photo session, and I’m spilling all the beans about it in The Funtographer Playbook over at Click Photo School.

This course isn’t about rigid poses or Pinterest-worthy perfection. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I turn even the most chaotic sessions (yes, including wild toddlers and camera-shy dads) into something magical. I walk you through my favorite games, prompts, and real-life hacks that help families let go—and help you capture the gold.

Because here’s the thing: the best-selling galleries I deliver? They’re not the ones where everyone’s looking and smiling. They’re the ones where everyone’s feeling something.

Pro tip from the Playbook

Start with energy before the camera comes out. Build the vibe. Don’t dive in with a shot list—connect first, shoot second, always (and start with the kids).

Whether you’re brand new to family photography or just need to spice things up, this course is your permission slip to make sessions feel less like work—and way more like play.
