As a Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer who has been working with families and babies for over 15 years, it’s safe to say I’ve learned a few insider tricks along the way! Whether you’re a first-time parent or a seasoned pro, newborn sessions can seem a little intimidating. I totally understand that! But, I can promise you that with the right photographer and these three tips? You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

1. Be Yourselves
This may seem like an obvious one! However, after all my experience I can tell you that it’s important to remember this. Photography is forever, and so people think that they need to present the best or most polished versions of themselves. The best thing you can do for your family is to be exactly who you are, imperfections and all. Looking back at captured moments, like how your newborn would squeeze your finger or sleepily look up at you, can take you right back into that moment. That’s what I strive for in my work as a Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer– authenticity, joy, and playfulness. Stiff posing and forced smiles is not what you want to look back on 20 years down the road, trust me.

2. Focus On Your Family
What I mean most by this is just to focus on being in the present moment with your loved ones. When there’s a camera clicking in front of you, it’s easy to feel awkward or worry about every little movement you’re making. Most photographers understand that some people struggle to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. We know how to work with you to get beautiful shots no matter what. The best thing to do is be present with your partner and your newborn, idle in these precious moments! Once you begin to do that, it’ll be like the camera isn’t even there at all. Take it from me, a seasoned Coeur d’Alene newborn photographer.

3. Relax & Enjoy
Bringing together a combination of the previous two tips will allow you to breathe, relax, and enjoy! All family and newborn photographers understand the worry and potential stress before any session, and especially newborn sessions. Working with your photographer and being transparent about any fears will allow them to put you at ease. The main concern you should have is wondering how to choose which images to include in your gallery wall, because there’s going to be too many you love. Revel in the small moments and just feel the connection between your family, because that’s what’s going to give you the best newborn photos possible. You can do this!
