How To Prepare for A Newborn Session With Toddlers
With the holiday season upon us, I know a lot of families are thinking about 2025 photos! One of the sweetest sessions (not like they all aren’t!) is newborn sessions with toddlers! I know what you’re thinking: a newborn, a toddler, and a photography session? No way! But trust me when I tell you it is always so magical, and so worth it. Let’s talk about what you need to do to prepare for session day!
1. Hype It Up!
Get them excited for the day! It’s going to be a special family activity, so be sure to remind them. In the weeks, and maybe even months (depending on how far in advance you book), leading up to the session, remind them that it’s coming up. I have always found that toddlers appreciate being made to feel in the loop! They want to follow your excitement, so get excited together.
2. Remind Them It’s For Them Too
Of course, this is a newborn session, but toddlers still get their time to shine. While you’re getting them prepared for the session, organize their space together! Have them pick out their favorite books and toys they want to showcase in their room. As a lifestyle family photographer, I always love when kiddos want to show me what they love! It creates a safe, comfortable space for everyone, and what is better than that?
3. Take Breaks If Needed
No one is immune to a toddler tantrum, even on their best day. If you need to take 5 minutes to regroup, do it! Regulate their emotions to get them back on track, and your photographer will be keeping the energy high no matter what. If you sense a tantrum coming on, try to redirect it if it’s possible! With a new baby and a strange person holding a camera in their face, it’s no wonder if they get a little overwhelmed. Remember, we’re all in this together.
4. Get Creative
By this I mean get creative with your outfits and how you think about the session! Don’t feel locked into one pose or one room, particularly if it’s an at-home session. You can move around freely in the spaces we’ve chosen to photograph in, and just let loose! I love when outfits are coordinated– not strictly matching, but similar themes, colors, and designs. This family went all out with their stunningly simple t-shirts!
5. As Always, Be Playful
At this point you all know that fun is the first ingredient for success in sessions working with me. Documenting those authentic moments is what I live for, and being able to reflect your family’s love back to you is truly the greatest gift. Chase your toddler, encourage interactions between the toddler and the newborn, and snuggle close for those beautiful newborn moments. Cute, cozy, and cuddly is the best way to capture that raw love.
