I’m so excited to be starting a new photo/community project called Seattle Mompreneurs. Over the years, I have met so many amazing women with unique talents in Seattle, WA! Women who have pursued their passion and spend countless hours running their business and balancing it with family even though it can feel thankless at times. I want to celebrate these amazing Mom entrepreneurs through providing head shots, promoting their business on the blog, and spreading the word to our community!
I will be highlighting a local woman-owned business throughout the year through blog posts telling you a little about what amazingness they bring to the community. You can learn more about them and their business and how awesome our Seattle community of women are. If you know of a hard-working, passionate Seattle Mompreneur who would be a great fit for this personal project, please have them contact me!
First up is my good friend/wife/kick-ass mother/and highly-skilled landscape architect, Margaret Hayes-Thombre of Hayes Landscape Design Services.
Thank you for joining us, Margaret!
How many years have you been in business? 11
Tell us a little bit about your business: I am a landscape architect who owns my own business, designing residential gardens and small commercial projects in the Seattle area. Hayes Landscape Design offers a variety of services, ranging from design of residential gardens, parks and recreational facilities to light commercial projects. A licensed landscape architect with twenty years of professional experience in the landscape architecture field, I provide site planning and design, grading and drainage analysis, planting design and garden “coaching”. I am experienced in designing and detailing site improvements including arbors, fences, paving, water features, seasonal color design, and preparing design through construction drawings and cost estimates. I try to approach each project with attentive care and work with clients to achieve their design goals keeping individual styles and budgets in mind.

What first sparked your passion and made you decide to turn it into a paying gig? Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I spent a lot of time outside, enjoying the beautiful places in the northwest. I also enjoy gardening, and spent summers growing vegetables in my parent’s garden. When I went off to college, I discovered this unique field of landscape architecture, which married my interests in design of physical space with the outdoors. I received my bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon, and have spent the last 20+ years designing functional and beautiful outdoor spaces!
What is your favorite project you never tire of doing? I love to help homeowners take ownership of their garden, creating outdoor spaces that are used year round and serve as an extension of their living space.
How do you find a balance between raising your kids and running a business? When my second child was born, I left the office environment and went to work for myself. I miss the creative energy that comes from collaborating with other professionals in a design office, but I love the freedom to set my own schedule. I have time to walk my kids to school, volunteer, and still take on projects that interest me and make me feel productive and contributing.
Why is it important to have great head shots that represent your business and your brand? My clients invite me into their homes and ask me to help them create spaces that they will use every day. There is nothing more personal than your home, and I feel like my head shot personalizes me and my business.
When you aren’t working on commissioned projects, what can you be found doing? What are your other passions? I try to spend some time outside every day, taking walks around the city, working in my garden, or hiking or skiing in the summer and winter. When I’m home, you can find me in the kitchen canning my garden bounty, quilting, and reading. I also love to travel and experience how other people around the world work and play.

We asked Margaret to draw up landscape plans for our front and back yard, and I was amazed by what she planned for our space. Not only will it be beautiful year-round with native, low-maintenance plants, but it will also be much more functional than it is now! I can not wait to get to work on it. If you’re in need of some landscape design and services, reach out to Margaret. You’ll be glad you did!
