Family Session at Home with Toddler

Why at Home?

There’s just something so special about doing your family session at home with a toddler and this one was no exception. Mom is a fabulous architect with an eye for interior design and they had just finished a remodel. She wanted to do the session at home for several reasons. Her little guy was a little slow to warm, they wanted their sweet dog to be in the photos too (after all, fur-babies are part of your family too!), and they wanted to document their life right now.

In-home sessions just look and feel different, in a good way! If a non-staged, relaxed session is your vibe, you should consider an in-home session. We take a lot of breaks, chat, give the little guy a quick snack, and take a mixture of photos wherever you like to hang out together!

How does it work?

Yes, I do give you lots of direction, because most family members don’t quite know what to do when a camera is on them. So I will help get you in the right spot and guide your naturally led poses, but then I let you do your thing: enjoy this thing called life together. I consider this type of session a docu-style session. It’s a mix of lifestyle session and documentary session. What does that even mean? You can read more about documentary and lifestyle sessions here.

How long does it take?

Believe it or not, it takes about 15 minutes to get a shooting game plan together. I meet your family members and fur-baby’s. We walk through your house, I learn more about you and where you like to hang out. I find out where the good light is (but I’m fully prepared to use artificial light, always!). In fact, this session here and most all in-home photos you see on my website and Instagram are taken with film and flash (so it’s okay if your home is dark!).

Then it takes me about 10-15 minutes to set up. During this pre-shoot time, most parents are still getting you and your kids ready or enjoying that last cup of coffee. Once I’m set up and ready, we start.

The session takes about 1 hour with breaks. During the breaks I change my film and get prepped for moving your session to another room. I also peek in on you while you’re letting fido out or enjoying a snack with your kiddo. That’s when I see those candid documentary moments and they are a time capsule of how your life is right now. You’ll see these photos peppered in your gallery too.

Most parents and partners are shocked at how easy and relaxing these sessions are. It doesn’t matter what your home looks like, how big or small it is, or if you have the “right” decor. It’s my job to use the right angles, rooms, and light to make your images imperfectly perfect for you.

Let’s Get In Touch

If you want to chat more about newborn or family sessions at home, let’s chat! It doesn’t need to be stressful or overly chaotic, trust me. If you’re interested in learning more about lifestyle photography, let’s get in touch! I am a huge lover of film photography, and the two go together so well. I’m booking 2025 sessions, so if you’re looking for new or updated family photos this year!
