Click Magazine Feature on Artificial Lighting: March/April 2016 Issue
Check out my Click Magazine Feature on Artificial Lighting! For the past two years, I’ve had a dream. I wanted to see my work and words featured in one of my favorite photography magazines—Click Magazine. In general, if you’re a photographer, you probably know how inspiring this publication is. It’s filled with stunning imagery, thoughtful articles, and insights from some of the most talented artists in the industry. I have countless issues stacked on my shelves, dog-eared and scribbled on, because the knowledge inside is just that good.
So when Click Magazine reached out and asked if I’d be interested in writing an article for the March/April 2016 issue, I nearly dropped my camera. Firstly, not only was I going to be published, but they wanted me to write about one of my absolute favorite topics—creating a natural light look with strobes.

Mastering Artificial Light for a Natural Look
Undoubtedly, northern US winters can be a photographer’s biggest challenge. The overcast skies and early sunsets mean natural light is often unreliable. That’s where strobes come in. Ironically, many photographers shy away from artificial lighting, fearing it will make their images look too harsh or unnatural. But here’s the secret: when used correctly, strobes can mimic natural light so beautifully that no one would ever guess artificial light was involved.
In my Click Magazine feature on artificial lighting, I break down how I achieve soft, organic lighting using strobes. Especially when shooting on film. (Yes, strobes and film are a match made in heaven!) By positioning my strobes strategically, using large modifiers, and adjusting the power settings just right, I can recreate the look of dreamy window light anytime, anywhere.

Why I Love Strobes and Flash (And Why You Should Too!)
If you’ve ever struggled with inconsistent lighting or lost precious moments because the sun disappeared, strobes and flash can change everything.
Here’s why strobes and flash are my go-to:
- Consistency – No more relying on the weather or racing against sunset. I can create perfect lighting in any situation.
- Control – I decide where the light falls, how soft it is, and how it enhances my subject.
- Works Beautifully with Film – The dynamic range of film, paired with the precision of strobes, results in rich, timeless images.
- Happy Clients – No stress over dark rooms or gloomy days—just bright, beautiful portraits every time.
